DIY Anti-Itch Stick or Spray for Summer

If your kids are anything like mine, this is the time of year when their pediatrician raises an eyebrow at their physical condition and I always fear someone is going to report me to social services or something. Let’s just say, that my kids have A LOT of fun over the summer and this fun is made clear by the cuts, scrapes, bruises, lumps and bumps that cover them from stem to stern. We have already been to the pediatrician and to various urgent-care clinics four times this season, and we have only been out of school for two weeks. From stings and bites, to mystery swelling and hives, I am in desperate need of a magic potion that can simultaneously heal, soothe and stop itchiness in its tracks. (Before we have to go back to the doctor when the obsessive scab-picking and bite-scratching leads to an infection…)

After a bit of research and an exciting  rollerball perfume bottle  purchase from eBay, I can proudly say I am well on my way to remedying most summer skin maladies we have encountered the past few weeks.

Anti-Itch and No Need to Pick Potion

Ingredients

  • ½ cup water
  • ½ Tbsp raw apple cider vinegar OR ¼ cup witch hazel
  • 1 Tbsp aloe vera gel
  • 10 drops lavender essential oil and chamomile essential oil*
  • 5 drops tea tree essential oil, thyme OR basil essential oil, and spearmint OR eucalyptus essential oil*

*Not sure which essential oils are safe when? Always be VERY careful and cautious when using essential oils on your kids before the age of 10.

Instructions

  1. Place all ingredients in a bottle you can cover and shake. You can use a mason jar, empty and thoroughly cleaned condiment bottle, or spray bottles you pick up at the store.

Once you have shaken all of the ingredients together, you are ready to rock! You can leave the anti-itch spray in the bottle as is, or I recommend pouring the mixture into 5-7 smaller spray bottles or rollerball perfume bottles and placing in various places, like your purse, the diaper bag and bathroom cabinets, so it is always handy.

Now, whether we are visiting my parents at the lake, heading to the park for the day, going on a hike with the dog, or simply playing in the backyard, whenever something bites, stings, or itches, we whip out the magic potion and hope we can dodge another visit to our increasingly suspicious pediatrician. You just gotta love summer! ?
